Home Life
In each program we have three common departments: Homelife, Counseling and Education; all three of these departments work together helping our students to learn to balance their lives.
The entire aspect of growth and healing does not simply come from 50 minutes of weekly counseling or from the discipline found in our classrooms, but from a community working together within a family-like setting to provide structure, security and stability, which equal change for our youth.
New Horizons Academy
NHA is a Christian, therapeutic, co-educational boarding school licensed by the State of Indiana. Students learn the value of character and integrity while undergoing intense academic training, personal counseling and Christian teaching.
Group therapy and individual counseling are integrated with Christ-centered approaches specific to your child’s needs. Though NHA works best for our students transferring home from CVS, it also provides a structured environment within the states for teens who may not need the intense structure of CVS.
NHA fills an important niche among New Horizons’ three schools. Because of our proximity to family and American culture, we are ideally situated for helping students who are re-integrating to home and family. Family counseling and structured home visits play an important part in helping students as they return home.
Caribe Vista School
For a hurting family, time apart is very beneficial. Although it is a painful decision, parents soon realize this time is needed in order to recoup and heal from all the turmoil they have experienced.
While living in another country in a structured environment, teens start to appreciate their parents and all the things they have taken for granted. CVS provides a place for conflict resolution techniques and problem-solving skills to be developed.
Group therapy sessions and individual counseling are integrated with Christ-centered approaches specific to a child’s need. Culture shock is a form of psychological disorientation produced by a sudden and complete change in one's cultural environment. The effect is proportional to the contrast between an individual's normal cultural milieu and that in which they are subsequently immersed.
A change in climate, ethnic diversity, geographical surroundings, mode of transportation, diet, friends, daily routines, coinage and language all tend to make adolescents remarkably more dependent upon our Christian staff for direction and emotional support, while also rendering them more malleable and capable of new perspectives. Culture shock in a highly structured setting greatly enhances meaningful communication, offering youth extraordinary occasions for making enriching discoveries that inspire personal growth.
Mountain View Academy
Our students are immersed in the Dominican culture, learning to appreciate the experience of cross-cultural living. Crises and problems are necessary for growth and are seen as opportunities. As they arise while a child is in our care, he or she will be taught proper conflict-resolution techniques and problem-solving skills. Group therapy sessions and individual counseling are integrated as needed with Christ-centered approaches.
Missanabie Woods Academy
Provides ten weeks of tight structure and intense relationships. Though students are provided with a Christian counselor, the community Christian living is the most important aspect. Providing boundaries and consequences, MWA uniquely exposes students to the Canadian wilderness.
Individual counseling helps each student to sort through his or her needs, desires, strengths, weaknesses, and perceptions. Self-reflection is encouraged by daily journals, group discussions and the solo experiences. Counselors help students gain a new perspective on themselves, those around them and their families. MWA is a great start for students beginning their time with NHYM, allowing staff to watch and evaluate the level of care needed.
