Hope for Parents
As a parent of a difficult-to-parent or at-risk youth, have you ever felt like they mean to hurt you, take pleasure in your pain? The greatest pain known to mankind is associated with our children, a wasting disease, a suicide, an attack or betrayal, separation or estrangement—stabs not only at the heart but at the very souls of parents.
No more telling scripture reflecting this can be found than when it says that pain pierced the heart of Mary. Oh what joy to be chosen the mother of the Son of God. If she had been told by Gabriel of the cross, would she have rejoiced, “Oh, be it done to me according to your word?” Mary treasured things in this same heart that was pierced.
Two crooks and one Christ headed to their crosses. One was redeemed. One was lost. And one hung in the middle, reached out to both and became the redemption of the world.
As parents you have watched your child self destruct, fighting more as the ambivalent prisoner than the peaceful Christ, both heading to Golgotha. You’ve watched them full of rage or silent and withdrawing, fighting and cursing—or worse yet, you’ve looked into their eyes during a drug induced stupor.
We all must daily take up our crosses to follow Christ.
As a parent, you are forced, compelled, to walk the path to your child’s cross. New Horizons will walk with you. It is walk of hope.
Mary could not see at the foot of that cross the redemption of the world—she was watching her boy. She knelt and wept in the shadow of the most powerful paradox the world has ever known. The death of her son—God’s son—led to the salvation of the world.
Like Mary, you cannot see that this stormy time in your child’s life may be the very thing that brings him or her life in Christ. What your child intends for evil God can use for good.
New Horizons will work to rebuild your child’s foundation for life and help you find God's good in it all.
Have faith in God. Ask him to show you if New Horizons is his answer for your family’s broken youth. They are waiting to love and support you through the storm.
